Abstract
This study explores the representation and subversion of subalternity in Francophone
Caribbean literature through Myriam Warner-Vieyra’s Juletane and Le Quimboiseur
l’avait dit. Relying on Gayatri Spivak’s concept of subalternity as its theoretical
framework and textual analysis as its methodology, the study examines how Antillean
women endure institutionalized oppression through socio-economic deprivation,
racial identity struggles, and gendered violence, which relegates them to subordinate
roles. Focusing on subaltern women, it highlights their silenced agency and the
intersecting forces of racial prejudice, class, and patriarchy that perpetuate their
marginalization. The discourse also investigates subversive strategies, such as writing,
which enable female characters to reclaim agency and challenge dominant narratives.
By doing so, the study contributes to broader discussions on representation and
emancipation in Francophone Caribbean literature, foregrounding subaltern
consciousness and critiquing enduring societal discriminations.
