Abstract :

The article explores underspecification as meaning construction technique in Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to the UN General Assembly’s 78th session. Relying on qualitative analysis to identify instances of underspecification and examine their impact on Netanyahu’s messages and diplomatic rhetoric, one reveals the metafunction of interpersonal communication achieved through underspecification. Underspecification refers to the strategy of omitting details or linguistic information taken in context, allowing the interlocutor to make assertions without stating them directly. It comes to posit that political leaders can leverage language to construct meaning, shape discourse, and further strategic interests on the global stage.
