A SOCIOLINGUISTIC STUDY OF BAOULE ANTHROPONYMS

Abstract

The present study attempts to investigate personal names among Baoulé people, from Côte d’Ivoire and considers naming as an essential aspect of the Baoulé society. It considers names as being unarbitrary labels and sociocultural tags which have sociocultural roles and significances. The study aims at investigating the sociolinguistic implications of the names and showing the factors motivating the process of name-giving among Baoulé people. In other words, the study seeks to reveal to what extent the lifestyle of Baoulé community affects their naming system. The study was conducted in Côte d’Ivoire. Twenty-one elderly informants were purposely chosen to take part in the study. This was supplemented by the researchers’ introspection given that all of them are natives of the Baoulé language. Data were collected through interviews, focus group discussion and personnal observation. The findings show that the naming system of Baoulé individuals is highly influenced by their lifestyle. The typology of their names includes birthday names, circumstantial names, names according to the order of birth, and hypocoristics.

TOWARD THE USE OF NUMERAL QUALIFIERS IN YORUBA: DISCOURSE IN IFÁ CORPORA, ÌBEJÌ, PROVERBS, INCANTATIONS AND COUNTING SYSTEMS

Abstract

It is an established rule in literature that, qualifiers qualify nouns and always come after the nouns in the grammar of Yorùbá language. This is however contrary to numeral interactions with qualifiers around contexts of Ifá corpora, Ìbejì- twins compound names, proverbs, ọfọ̀- incantation and Yoruba counting systems. This study seeks to fill this gap. Relevant data relating to nominal quantifiers are carefully selected across various contexts, discourse and texts analyzed with empirical approach- a method that investigates a problem within its real life context through existing cases. It is stated that, like VO and OV languages, Yoruba nominal qualifiers operate NumN and NNum. The study concludes that, rules governing numeral qualifiers in Yoruba are unstable just as the language of Ifá is not static. Keywords: Ìbejì, Ifá, noun qualifier, numerals, proverbs

LE GROUPE NOMINAL (GN) EN CONTEXTE DE COVID-19 : DE LA MOBILISATION DES RESSOURCES LINGUISTIQUES A LA CREATION LEXICALE

Abstract

Le monde entier, au XXI ème siècle, traverse une période inédite marquée par la présence d’une pandémie nommée Covid-19. Cette circonstance dangereuse pour les vies humaines favorise l’enrichissement de la langue française par un vocabulaire nouveau. La présente communication, qui traite de la construction du groupe nominal dans l’espace francophone en situation de Covid-19, se développe autour d’un questionnement fondamental : quelles sont les structures substantives auxquelles les locuteurs ont recours pendant la période de la pandémie du coronavirus ? Quels sont les éléments qui les composent ? Il s’agit de voir comment les procédés tels que la dérivation, la composition et l’expansion permettent au groupe nominal de s’adapter au contexte de crise sanitaire.

EXPLORING SUPERVISION PRACTICES IN RIVE DROITE SCHOOL DISTRICT MADRASAS OF BAMAKO

Abstract

This study is akin to the instructional supervision culture of Arabic-Islamic schooling in the Madrasas of one of the two school districts of Bamako. It explores the characteristics of the supervisory practices and their conformity with the modern trends in the field of instructional supervision. The principal aim of this research is to draw the attention of decision makers to some hitches that plague the sector of Islamic schooling in Mali, and to make researchers interested in the problems thereof. We adopted a mixed method to display our findings. It consists in displaying quantitative data, followed by complementary descriptive clarifications. Our research has found that the supervisory practices in the Madrasas of Rive Droite School District of Bamako are affected by lamentable bureaucratic traditions that put them in conflict with modern trends in instructional supervision.

LINGUISTIC CARVING OF SOCIAL POSITION

Abstract

In this paper, I am attempting to show how linguistic forms can be a window through which people social position can be watched. In fact, when people communicate in a given situation, there is a need to select particular linguistic forms to address one another. The selection of such forms is conditioned by relationships among participants Selecting an inappropriate form may probably lead to inconvenience. So, there is a need to use the right form for the right participant in order to avoid such situations. The question which is therefore raised here is whether there are forms that best sculpt the way to address among participants. The answer to this concern is based on the assumption that the forms that express social position best sculpt the way to address. It is important to have quite a good knowledge of such forms which contextual use depends on the type of relationship among participants.

THE COMMUNICATIONAL SUBTILITIES IN CONSTRUCTING SOCIAL AND BEHAVIOR CHANGE MESSAGES FOR THE INTEGRATION OF ISLAMIC SHOOLS IN CÔTE D’IVOIRE

Abstract

Local and rural communities in developing countries are very often faced to the fact that awareness messages in social and behavior change process are designed and conveyed in the official language of the country. In Côte d’Ivoire, it is French. The approximate translations into local languages compromise the understanding of messages and give meanings that thwart the success of development initiatives within community. The current study is an empirical research that highlights translation constraints, in the designing of the national strategy of Islamic school integration in the national education system. The study puts in evidence the misunderstanding built and maintained by the translation of «école» and «integration» from French into Jula. The study uses direct participant observation and literature reviews.

PATRIARCHY, DETERMINATION AND WOMEN’S SUBORDINATION: A REFLECTION ON WOMEN’S NEGOTIATION OF IDENTITY IN NGUGI WA THIONG’O’S COLONIAL NARRATIVES

Abstract

Women’s condition is a key issue in Ngugi wa Thiong’o’s novels. His works are often criticised for their inability to dismantle the patriarchal structures that keep women under male domination. Leaning on Marxism and womanism, the study establishes the link between the negotiation of women’s identity, their subordination and patriarchy to highlight its implications in the colonial narratives of wa Thiong’o. The results show that women’s subordination is consequent to the limits established by patriarchal norms and values. Moreover, in the colonial narratives of wa Thiong’o, women do not negotiate their identity in the sense of overthrowing the patriarchal system. Instead, they seek the homeostasis of the social conditions that allow them to express their femininity, even if this implies being subordinate to men.

L’ENJEU DU DEICTIQUE « I » 56 DANS LE JEU NARRATIF DANS QUELQUES ROMANS DE JACK LONDON

Abstract

Notre corpus se compose de trois romans de Jack London: The People of the Abyss, The Road, et John Barleycorn publiés de 1903 à 1907. Ils traitent des rapports d’exploitants-exploités entre bourgeois et prolétaires. À travers cet article, la sociocritique vise à montrer l’enjeu du déictique personnel «I» en situation d’énonciation. Elle démontre que dans le récit autofictionnel tel qu’il est question dans le corpus, le narrateur homodiégétique demeure la figure de l’auteur dans le texte. À cet égard, l’usage de «I» permet de contourner les conventions littéraires qui autorisent à voiler la certitude de l’origine énonciative comme dans le cas du narrateur omniscient. En effet, l’enjeu de l’énonciateur «I», c’est la problématique de la liberté d’expression, le libre arbitre dans le choix d’afficher ou non l’identité sociale de l’énonciateur et dans le maniement de la langue. Notre analyse porte sur les modalités de son fonctionnement dans l’énonciation. L’approche pragmatique sied à mettre en lumière la mobilité transdiscursive de l’énonciateur à travers le texte, le méta-texte et l’extra-texte.

LE PROVERBE DANS LE CONTE AFRICAIN, UNE STRATEGIE ARGUMENTATIVE : LE CAS DE LES CONTES D’AHMADOU-KOUMBA DE BIRAGO DIOP

Abstract

Le conte africain fait souvent recours au proverbe dans sa narration pour convaincre davantage le public et le lecteur. Tel est le cas de Les contes d’Ahmadou Koumba de Birago Diop où la présence du proverbe dans le conte donne force au message véhiculé en participant à son aspect esthétique. Pour parvenir à cette fin, la problématique suivante a été posée : En quoi le proverbe dans le conte d’Ahmadou Koumba présente-t-il une stratégie argumentative ? L’objectif visé dans cette étude est de montrer que l’usage du proverbe dans le conte est une force à l’argumentation de l’auteur. C’est pour cela que la narratologie et la sociocritique ont été sollicités comme méthodes d’analyse et cela a abouti aux résultats suivants : Le proverbe renforce l’argumentation du conte en mettant en relief une stratégie qui se perçoit grâce à une approche rhétorique et thématique. En plus de cela, il y a des procédés littéraires et des stratégies scripturales qui le justifient.

DE LA BILATERALITE D’INCIDENCE ENTRE LES PARTIES DE LA LANGUE : APPORT ET SUPPORT SEMANTICOSYNTAXIQUE ENTRE LE VERBE ET LE SN SUJET

Abstract

En termes de teneur notionnelle des composantes linguistiques, l’incidence favorise nécessairement la justification des rapports qui les mettent en corrélation. Comme principe guillaumien, il convoque initialement les parties de langue prédicatives, selon que celles-ci sont apport sémantique et support formel, en fonction du régime d’incidence. Seulement, l’analogie entre les unités lexicales ne saurait être exclusive à l’aspect sémantique. Ainsi, notre objectif, dans cette contribution, est de montrer que, si le support formel demeure, l’apport peut être tout autant sémantique que syntaxique, notamment dans la relation établie entre le verbe et le SN sujet. Plutôt que de se limiter à la linéarité des unités linguistiques comme approche syntaxique, ainsi que le suggère par exemple Guy Cornillac, l’on pourrait également se référer aux facteurs flexionnels comme modus operandi. Syntaxiquement, le sujet est apport au support verbal si ses critères syntaxiques de genre, de nombre et de personne s’adossent au verbe, indépendamment de leur disposition dans la chaine énonciative.

LES ADJECTIFS NUMERAUX EN FRANÇAIS ET EN YORÙBÁ : UNE ETUDE CONTRASTIVE ET IMPLICATION PEDAGOGIQUE EN CLASSE DE FLE EN MILIEU YORÙBÁ DU NIGERIA

Abstract

En classe de français langue étrangère en milieu yoruba du Nigeria, l’interférence linguistique demeure l’une des difficultés auxquelles se heurtent continuellement les apprenants yorubas dans le processus d’apprentissage de la langue française. Prévenir et déjouer ces interférences constituent un défi aux enseignants. Cet article se propose de mettre en exergue certains problèmes que rencontrent les apprenants yorùbà en classe de FLE au niveau de l’utilisation des adjectifs numéraux cardinaux et ordinaux en français. Les questions de recherche qui nous intéressent dans cette étude sont les questions suivantes : quelles sont les causes des erreurs grammaticales au niveau de l’utilisation des adjectifs numéraux et ordinaux en français et quelles sont les approches didactiques au service des apprenants pour améliorer ces erreurs ? Pour la méthodologie utilisée dans cette étude, les enquêtes sur le terrain nous amené près des apprenants yorubas en troisième année de leur étude et qui sont au nombre de soixante-dix (50 femmes et 10 hommes) dans quatre Universités nigérianes: University of Ibadan, Ibadan ; Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife ; Lagos State University, Ojo et Osun State University, Ikire Campus. Notre corpus d’analyse est constitué de la production écrite des apprenants évaluée pour découvrir les erreurs grammaticales au niveau des adjectives numéraux et cardinaux en classe de FLE de la part de nos témoins. Base sur les données collectées auprès de nos témoins, cet article vise à repérer les erreurs commises, à comprendre leur source et proposer quelques approches correctives didactiques.

RUMEUR EN MILIEU SCOLAIRE : ENTRE CONSTRUCTION, DECONSTRUCTION ET RECONSTRUCTION IDENTITAIRE : ETUDE DE CAS DES COLLEGES MONTHE, ETOILE ET DES ETABLISSEMENTS DE LIMBE

Abstract

La rumeur est l’une des variantes les plus stigmatisantes de la violence en milieu scolaire. Elle nous préoccupe pour ses mécanismes de construction, sa circulation et sa visée. Dès lors, il nous importe de savoir quels partenaires discursifs sont convoqués par ce dispositif particulier ? Quelles stratégies discursives il emploie ? Et pour quels intérêts ? L’objectif de cette recherche est d’étudier le qui, le comment et le pourquoi de la rumeur scolaire. Nous adoptons une démarche descriptive et déductive, appuyée sur l’analyse du discours sociosémio-communicationnelle de Patrick Charaudeau qui donne accès aux aspects sociologiques, sémiologiques et communicationnels. A cet effet, nous examinerons le profil des partenaires discursifs, les stratégies de destruction et de reconstruction identitaires et les impacts de la rumeur scolaire. Nous comptons monter que la dilatation identitaire de l’auteur, associée aux représentations sociales, détruisent les ethos préconstruits des victimes et les déstabilisent à tous égards.
